History


1. In 1971, the Graduate Institute of Euroean Studies was formally established, which included American Studies subgroup. The Ph.D program was started in 2010. 
The institute was restructured and merged with Graduate Institute of Russian and Slavic Studies into the current institute in 2009 with subgroups of European Union Studies and Russian Studies. The Graduate Insitute of European Studies stopped division of research since 2018.


2. In 1974, the Graduate Institute of American Studies was formally established with the background of American Research Institute and American Studies subgroup from Graduate Institute of European Studies back in 1969. The Ph.D program was started in 1984.

The insitute was merged with Graduate Institute of Latin American Studies into the Graduate Institute of American Studies in 2009, with subgroups of American Studies and Latin American Studies. 

In 2016, the Graduate Institute of American Studies stopped the enrolment of new students, and the enrolment of students was resumed for Graduate Institute of Latin American Studies.


3. The Graduate Institute of International Affairs and Strategic Studies was established in 1981, with executive masters program established in 1999, and the Ph.D progam was started in 2006.
4. In 1983, the Graduate Institute of Japan Studies was established, and the executive masters program started in 1999. 

The institute was merged with Graduate Institute of South East Asia Studies in 2009 and rebranded into Graduate Institute of Asian Studies with subgroups of Japan Studies and South East Asia Studies.

In 2016, the Graduate Institute of Asian Studies stopped the enrolment of new students, and was rebranded into Graduate Institute of Japanese Political and Economy Studies.


5. The Graduate Institute of Latin American Studies was established in 1989.

The institute stopped recruiting new students in 2009 and was merged into Graduate Institute of American Studies with subgroups of American Studies and Latin American Studies.

In 2016, the Graduate Institute of Latin American Studies had resumed the enrolment of new students, and the Graduate Institute of American Studies had stopped the enrolment of new students.


6. The Graduate Institute of Russian and Slavic Studies was established in 1990.

The institute stopped recruiting new students in 2009 and was merged into Graduate Institute of European Studies with subgroups of European Union Studies and Russian Studies.

Since 2018, there is no division of groups for the Graduate Institute of European Studies.


7. The Graduate Institute of China Studies was established in 1992, and the executive masters program was started in 1999.
8. The Graduate Institute of South East Asia Studies was established in 1996.

Starting 2009, the institute stopped recruiting and was merged with Graduate Institute of Japan Studies into Gradutate Institute of Asia Studies with subgroups of Japan Studies and South East Asia Studies.

The Graduate Institute of South East Asia Studies had stopped enrolment of new students since 2016.


9. The Master's Program in Taiwan and Asia-Pacific Studies (English-taught Program) was started in 2014 and stopped new enrolments since 2021.
10. The Department of Diplomacy and International Relations (English-taught Undergraduate Program) was started in 2015. In 2022, the Graduate Institute of European Studies and the Graduate Institute of China Studies were affiliated with Department of Diplomacy and International Relations.

11. The Department of International Tourism Management (English-taught Undergraduate Program) was founded in 1996.
12. The Department of Global Politics and Economics (English-taught Undergraduate Program) wa founded in 1995. In 2022, the Graduate Institute of Latin American Studies and the Graduate Institute of Japanese Political and Economic Studies were affiliated with Department of Global Politics and Economics.
